Two NCC Staff Get CHW Certified

Nevada Cancer Coalition now has two staff members who are certified Community Health Workers. Valerie Martinez and Jorge Arambula, both cancer outreach coordinators for NCC, earned their CHW certification in November.

Both Valerie and Jorge are navigators with NCC’s ThriveNV program and work with NCC members and the community to promote cancer prevention, early detection and quality of life to Nevadans. Through the CHW training, they were able to build their skills to become more effective in all aspects of their work.

PSA Screening for HIM Act Virtual Postcard Party

American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and the Black Volunteer Caucus are hosting a virtual postcard event to support a prostate cancer screening bill in Congress. At this fun virtual event, you will learn more about the "PSA Screening for HIM Act," which would provide free prostate cancer screenings for those at high risk for the disease if made into law. To urge your Senators to support this lifesaving bill, you will be asked to write postcards to both of your U.S. Senators.

Nevada Senator Introduces ‘Lowering Costs For Caregivers Act’

Nevada Senator Jacky Rosen this month introduced bipartisan legislation to lower costs for caregivers and make it easier for adult children to support a parent’s medical expenses. 

The bill is called the Lowering Costs For Caregivers Act, and if passed, it will allow caregivers to help their families by using their tax-free health savings accounts and flexible spending accounts for health care for their parents. Currently, adult children cannot use these accounts to cover medical expenses for their parents unless the parents are classified as dependents.

Cervical Health Month 2024 Resources

Cervical cancer incidence and mortality is relatively low compared to some other cancers in Nevada. However, with proven effective prevention and screening methods such as HPV vaccination and Pap/HPV screening, Nevada's rates should be much, much lower.

NCC Signs On in Support of Surveillance Colonoscopy Coverage

This month Nevada Cancer Coalition signed on to a letter drafted by a coalition of partners urging insurance coverage of surveillance colonoscopy as a no-cost preventive service.

A surveillance colonoscopy is a preventive screening exam completed within 1-10 years of a previous screening colonoscopy for individuals who had precancerous polyps or lesions removed during the procedure. As is the case with other preventive screenings for individuals who are at increased risk for cancer, the procedure remains a preventive screening but at a shorter interval.

As part of the Biden Administration’s Cancer Moonshot and the President’s Cancer Cabinet, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and Veterans Affairs (VA), in collaboration with several other Department of Health and Human Services agencies, are developing national standards for survivorship care. The goal of this project is to define standards for (1) essential health system policy and process components of survivorship care programs; and (2) evaluation of the quality of survivorship care.
