NCC Travels I-80 Educating Nevadans on Cancer
03 March, 2025
Every March the team from Nevada Cancer Coalition hits the road, traveling along Interstate 80 to attend the popular Humboldt General Hospital Health Fair in Winnemucca and the Elko Community Health Fair in Elko. We love attending these events because they give us an opportunity to reconnect with community members, share the latest information on cancer prevention and early detection, and visit with partners we don't often get to see in-person.
As we have in the past, we've also used the trip as an opportunity to educate rural Nevada students on sun safety through the Sun Smart Schools program. The stops include classroom presentations at middle schools and elementary school assemblies, all tailored for grade level and packed with information about protecting their skin from UV radiation.
Lily and Sarah, who headed to Elko, also connected with dental professionals to share resources for increasing HPV vaccination -- a vaccine they're now able to administer with recently adopted state laws. Cari and Michelle took the inflatable lungs to Winnemucca where lung screening champion Diane Klassen is working to screen as many eligible Nevadans for lung cancer as she can.
