With Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month just days away (March 1 - 31) NCC, in collaboration with Nevada Colon Cancer Partnership, has been working on a statewide campaign to increase colon cancer screening. The project is modeled on a 2013 project NCC piloted with Community Health Alliance in their clinics. In just a few months they saw a 300% increase in colon cancer screening among their patients.
Nevada Cancer Coalition, in conjunction with Nevada Colon Cancer Partnership, is pleased to host this training via toll-free web-conference. This program is eligible for one free CME/CEU credit. Attendees wishing to obtain a CME/CEU credit must complete a post-test evaluation.

No, there won’t be a walk. And we won’t be pinning on colored ribbons. We are now accepting nominations for the 2013 Denise Dunning Award. Presented annually at the Nevada Cancer Control Summit, the award was created in 2012 to recognize and celebrate outstanding cancer control efforts in the state of Nevada. The award is given in memory of Denise Faye Dunning, whose passion and leadership was crucial to advancing cancer prevention, control and treatment in Nevada. As the State Comprehensive Cancer Control Coordinator, she was dedicated to the Coalition and its work until cancer took her life.
We are pleased to invite you to submit abstracts for posters for the 2014 Nevada Cancer Control Summit, slated for April 25, 2014 at the UNLV Student Union in Las Vegas, Nev. This event represents an opportunity to showcase projects and programs including evidence-based cancer prevention and screening initiatives, innovative cancer research and use of data,advances in treatment of patients with cancer, and survivorship. Accepted posters will be on display throughout the day and summit attendees will be asked to judge poster presentations in various categories.

Some things from the 70’s are still cool. The Eagles, Star Wars, peace signs, and the Great American Smokeout. Yes, you read right. Since the mid-70’s the American Cancer Society and other health organizations have called on smokers to quit for just 24 hours during the Great American Smokeout. This year it's on Thursday, November 21.
Despite a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicating a leveling off of colorectal cancer screening nationwide, Nevada’s screening programs are seeing some success, notably with an increase in simple at-home screening tests. From 2010 to 2012, the most recent data available, the percent of Nevadans up-to-date for colorectal cancer screening overall saw a slight increase, from 56.8 percent to 58 percent.
Increasing screening and early detection of cancers throughout the state is an NCC goal. When it comes to breast cancer, regular screening can assist in detecting cancer before symptoms occur, and usher women towards diagnostic tests to determine if cancer is present. In Nevada breast cancer screening rates are at 66.8% for women 40+ who've had a mammogram in the past two years, as reported in the CDC's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System 2012 (BRFSS). That's far below the national average of 74%, and even farther below the Healthy People 2020 target of 81.1%.
