Coffee for Colorectal Cancer Screening

Join NCC and the Reno-Sparks Tribal Health Center team to learn more about colorectal cancer prevention and early detection. We'll have Colin the Inflatable Colon open for tours, free coffee, goodies, and at-home stool-based colon cancer screening kits available to take home. 

Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of cancer death among men and women in Nevada. Finding growths, called polyps, early before they become cancer can stop the disease before it starts.

Join the Mountain West Cancer Collaborative for a dynamic webinar highlighting the vital role of Community Health Workers (CHWs) in cancer prevention, education, and patient support. Experts from the Mountain West Region will share best practices for developing culturally responsive education programs, explore strategies to reduce health disparities, and showcase successful CHW-led initiatives. Participants will engage in discussions on enhancing CHW involvement in cancer care and take away actionable insights to strengthen community-based efforts.

Walk With a Doc: Colon Health with Dr. Ovunc Bardakciolu

Join Dr. Ovunc Bardakcioglu (Dr. B) for March's Walk with a Doc. Dr. B will be presenting on colon health in honor of March as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. The walk is an opportunity to have fun and meet new people, walk at your own pace, and ask questions of the doctor.

Addressing Nevada’s Nursing Shortage with Federal Legislation

Nevada is facing a critical nursing shortage, making it increasingly difficult for patients to receive timely and high-quality care. Recognizing this urgent issue, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) has introduced the Train More Nurses Act alongside Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), a bipartisan bill aimed at expanding the nursing workforce in Nevada and other states and ensuring better access to care nationwide.

Federal Funding Supports Cancer Control in Nevada

The change of presidential administrations in January 2025 brought with it increased scrutiny of federal program funding. In late January, the administration put a halt to much of the nation’s federally funded research and issued memos to pause federal funding for most programs while the administration ensures that the spending complies with executive orders eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion activities.

ACS Releases 2025 Facts & Figures

The American Cancer Society recently released its annual Cancer Facts and Figures report with data and analysis on cancer incidence and mortality across the United States. Major findings in this year’s report show that new cases of cancer continue to rise in women younger than 50, but overall cancer deaths continue to decline.

“Despite the decreases in death rates, cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the US, and the leading cause of death in people younger than 85,” ACS researchers note.
