Last Thursday, March 27, a contingent of cancer control professionals working in states across the Mountain West traveled together to Washington D.C. to share local insights with congressional representatives. The group represented Nevada, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana and was organized by a team from Huntsman Cancer Institute, a National Cancer Institute cancer center that serves communities in all five states.

A bill to improve access to lung cancer screening with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) received support on Friday, March 21 from a number of statewide organizations who testified in favor of the legislation. Senate Bill 387, sponsored by Senator Roberta Lange, would add lung cancer screening to the list of cancer screenings required to be covered by Nevada insurers with no cost sharing or copays.

To address this issue, U.S. Senators Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and John Boozman (R-AR) introduced the Physicians for Underserved Areas Act, which would ensure that when hospitals close, residency slots are redistributed to areas in need.
